The word "cacao" traces its roots back to the ancient Mayan language, deriving from "Ka’kau" meaning "heart blood," and "Chokola," which means "to drink together." These words highlight the deep cultural significance of cacao for the Maya, who revered it as a sacred element in their society.
According to Mayan beliefs, cacao played a divine role in human creation. Legend has it that the gods bled onto the cacao pods, imparting the essence of life to humankind and gifting cacao as a symbol of unity and blessing.
